Cirque du Soleil
What is Cirque du Soleil? In my opinion it is the most amazing live performance you might ever see!
The name of the circus is French because it was founded in Montreal, Canada. The translation into English is “Circus of the Sun”
Just like the Big Apple Circus, it was founded by two street performers. Their names are Guy Laliberte and Daniel Gauthier. In the relative history of things, the Cirque is pretty young. It was founded in 1984.
What really sets it apart from other circuses is that there is no ring and no animals and each different show tells a story. When you go to other circuses you get to see different acts but they are usually unrelated to eachother.
While other circuses usually draw many young children, this is a show for children and adults alike. The Cirque performs worldwide and has performed in over 200 cities since its beginning in 1984. They project that about 15 million people will experience their show in 2009.
The Touring Shows
Currently they are touring 8 different shows around the world:
- Alegria – Canada, United Arab Emirates, USA
- Cirque 2009 (working title) – Canada
- Corteo – Japan
- Dralion – Australia, New Zealand
- Kooza – USA
- Quidam – Ireland, United Kingdom
- Saltimbanco – USA
- Varekai – Portugal, Russia, Spain
If you can, I would recommend going to see Kooza. If you go to this show you can see Anthony Gatto, one of the world’s best jugglers. You won’t see juggling like this in any other circus!
I have also had the opportunity to see the DVD of Quidam and I thought it was amazing.

In addition to all of the touring shows, there are permanent shows in different locations:
- Criss Angel Believe – At Luxor, Las Vegas, NV
- Ka – At MGM Grand, Las Vegas, NV
- Mystère – At Treasure Island, Las Vegas, NV
- “O” – At Bellagio, Las Vegas, NV
